New York has a reputation<\/strong>: it\u2019s fast-paced, high-stakes and always on. For ambitious students, that\u2019s the point. This is a city that constantly tests you and pushes you to grow by leaving your comfort zone. Challenges teach you resilience, which is a key skill in today\u2019s job market, particularly in business and management roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resilience isn\u2019t a trait that you\u2019re born with. It\u2019s something you develop<\/strong> through practice and repeated exposure. You\u2019ll notice it in how quickly you recover from a setback, or when you walk confidently into a room that once made you feel nervous.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why resilience is climbing the recruiter wishlist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The world of work has changed. Markets shift quickly, industries are being reshaped by AI<\/a> and economic challenges have become constant. In response, companies are looking beyond technical expertise when hiring. They\u2019re seeking people with the ability to recover, adapt and keep performing<\/strong> if things don\u2019t go as planned.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025<\/a>, resilience, flexibility and agility ranked second among the top skills employers are seeking, higher than leadership and creative thinking. Meanwhile, a 2025 HR survey<\/a> found that 57% of organizations consider resilience essential in candidates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The numbers are clear: the ability to handle pressure and come back stronger has become a competitive advantage. And like any skill worth having, it can be trained. The question is, how?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, though, that the city only gives back what you put in. Seeking out challenges instead of waiting for them to find you is what defines the real New York hustle<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning from people who\u2019ve done it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The people you learn from matter as much as the environment you\u2019re learning in. At IENYC, faculty<\/a> who\u2019ve operated at senior levels and navigated high-pressure situations bring something truly valuable to the classroom: firsthand knowledge of what resilience looks like in p<\/strong>ractice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That changes the nature of the feedback you receive in class. It\u2019s direct, specific, honest and actionable, because it comes from people who know what\u2019s really required. Training resilience here means you\u2019re practicing it in real time by learning to respond to criticism, adjust your approach and come back stronger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting on his experience at IENYC, Maximilian says: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have learned that I perform best in fast-paced and demanding environments. Navigating new challenges and uncertainty has strengthened my resilience, sharpened my decision-making and shown me that I am capable of adapting quickly under pressure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These kinds of insights only come from being immersed in a dynamic business hub and learning alongside professionals who tackle complex challenges<\/strong> every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effort, consistency and follow-through<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Resilience is less about dramatic recoveries and more about what you do every day. This means showing up consistently when things are hard, following through on commitments when your motivation dips and doing the work repeatedly because you know it\u2019s building towards something.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These habits develop quickly in New York, and the diversity of the city pushes this further. When you\u2019re surrounded by people from different backgrounds, countries and industries, you\u2019re constantly challenged to adapt and communicate across differences. That friction is invaluable preparation for a global career, and it\u2019s built into daily life here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casandra Timofte, alum of the MS in Global Business & Sustainability at IENYC, describes how the environment she found in the city and at the school helped her grow: <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were constantly pushed into unfamiliar territory and expected to deliver rigorous work. That gave me the confidence to tackle challenges I know nothing about and the discipline to perform under pressure.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time you\u2019re navigating your first years in the workforce<\/a> after graduation, the habits you formed here will already be second nature. You won\u2019t just be tough.
