If NYC is the greatest classroom on Earth, then its vast variety of events are the lectures. On Earth Day, every New Yorker is called to participate, learn and do their part to build a more sustainable world. Because here, sustainability isn’t some abstract concept; it’s something we can all get involved in, both personally and professionally.
The Earth Day initiative is already over 50 years old, and part of its mandate is to foster climate and environmental literacy. In New York City, that involves key players like sustainable businesses, nonprofits and green living experts delivering exhibitions, events, workshops, artwork, live performances and more to encourage people to be more Earth-friendly in every part of their lives.
Getting out there and joining in on Earth Day events around NYC is one way students, like those in our Master of Science in Global Business & Sustainability, can take part. In the process, you’ll gain firsthand insight into how companies integrate a critical business imperative into both strategy and operations.
These organizations can’t afford to treat sustainability as a one-day-a-year, box-ticking exercise: for them, it’s culturally embedded, bridging the gap between profit and purpose.

“I realized I was growing when I started noticing how the concepts we learn connect to everyday life. Whether I’m in a supermarket or an airport, I now think about how that space functions, not just as a business, but in terms of its social impact and sustainability.” -Sali Alkaabi, MS in Global Business & Sustainability alumna
The message is that success and sustainability don’t need to be on opposing sides; in fact, the latter is a distinct competitive advantage in today’s landscape. Whether your ambition is to launch your own startup or flourish at a multinational, more careers are being built around sustainability.

There are plenty of businesses making waves by delivering strong financial results while simultaneously leaving a positive mark on society. Some of the best examples of these are based right here in New York City, and choosing to study in the Big Apple gives you the chance to see them operate up close and personal.
Taking a social impact MBA is a strong start, but an IENYC education is all about turning ambition into action. The city offers you many opportunities to get outside the classroom and actively test new ideas. Earth Day is just one of them.
What’s happening on the streets of New York resonates directly with the ideas you’ll encounter in the IENYC classroom. From global players like Celonis leveraging data to help firms reduce resource use, to local movements like Zero Waste NYC or the city’s own circular economy initiative, it’s easier to join the sustainability dots if they’re right on your doorstep.
It’s also easier if you’re guided by hands-on experience rather than pure academic theory. In the MS in Global Business & Sustainability, for example, we challenge students to address pressing social and environmental challenges.

In one module, you’re tasked with identifying a market opportunity in the sustainability sector, then designing a business model and prototype and stress-testing possible solutions to ensure both financial viability and practical impact. With such a practical approach, you’ll learn real skills that translate directly to the world of work.
The effect of Earth Day continues year-round, as it has done over so many decades. NYC is a global leader in demonstrating the sustainable legacy of the work it inspires.

Take the re-imagining of the Brooklyn Army Terminal as a hub for economic growth and innovation, for instance. The Terminal is now home to a number of small-scale manufacturers, climate tech firms and other entrepreneurial enterprises.
It’s the perfect example of how New York City makes the abstract real, and why it is such a hub for innovative sustainability, CSR and other green initiatives.
NYC shows what can be done when the right ideas meet drive and determination. Earth Day 2026 takes place on April 19 in Union Square, but if you miss it, don’t worry: there are plenty of opportunities to make a difference in the Big Apple.

If your own ambitions lie in the sustainability sector, and you’re ready to meet the challenge of studying an MBA in New York, you need a program that comes with sustainability and business integration built in. Not as some kind of trendy add-on, but as a key thread running throughout the curriculum.
As an IENYC student, the MS in Global Business & Sustainability places you right in the heart of a global hub and asks you, “What problem do you want to solve?” Then the program arms you with the knowledge, practical skills and opportunity to do just that. Combine global market insight with responsible decision-making and, like Earth Day, you’ll show the world that sustainability and success can go hand in hand.
